1706 Arij van Bengalen
This account of the experiences of the slave Ari is reported by one of his fellow prisoners, the free burgher Jacobus van der Heijden.2 Ari’s story is revealing on several counts.3 It is one of the very few sources which gives an indication – however fleeting – of how a Cape slave had originally been captured in Asia. It then gives insights into the tense relationship between a lone deserter and other slave runaways he encountered, in which competition for food and rivalries over leadership played a part. Some details are given on how arson, a frequent means of slave resistance, was carried out.4 The text is also of great linguistic interest, since the reported words of the slaves provide some of the earliest forms of the restructuring of Dutch at the Cape which eventually resulted in the formation of Afrikaans.
Ari was subsequently tortured and confessed, though he also blamed the other slaves who had encouraged him to commit arson, and he was placed on Robben Island in heavy chains ‘until he was more informative’ about his accomplices and pending sentence.5 He died there in 1708.6

In other documentation for this case, Ari is named ‘van Bengalen’ but, as this document makes clear, he originated from the region ‘between Suratte and Persia’ (modern Pakistan). He may well have been taken by his captors to Bengal, a region from which the VOC obtained many slaves, although we have no details of this. This case thus serves as a warning that slave toponyms may indicate the place of sale to the Dutch, rather than the actual area of slave origins. ↩

Jacobus van der Heijden was in the ‘Swart Gat’ prison for his part in the burgher conflict with the governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel. In the so-called Contra-Deductie, which the rebellious burghers wrote shortly after this, and in which the illegal imprisonment of Van der Heijden was considered proof of Van der Stel’s corruption and maladministration, he refers to Ari as his ‘confrater’ (fellow brother) in prison, and mentions that while being locked up, he taught the slave the Ten Commandments and the Lord’s Prayer (Franken 1953: 87). After Van der Stel’s recall in 1708, Van der Heijden obtained the meat pachtpachtLiterally ‘lease.’ The VOC at the Cape had a system whereby the right to retail certain profitable goods (mostly alcohol and meat) was sold regularly. A pacht was therefore in effect a monopoly. and became one of the most prosperous and influential residents of the colony (Schoeman 2002a: 156, 158). ↩

This testimony of Van der Heijden is followed by an (incomplete) interrogation of Ari, done in the torture room, and his confession (CJ 2961, ff. 77-82). A document entitled eijsch en conclusie ad torturam is preserved in CJ 309, ff. 41-3 [modern pagination] which justified why Arij should be tortured. On 10 August 1706 the fiscal suggested that since he refused to name his accomplices, Ari be sent to Robben Island ‘met een sware keeten en block aan bijde beenen gehegt aan een ijsere kraag om den hals’ (with a heavy chain and block on both legs connected to an iron collar around the neck). Today, 28 May 1706, there appears before me, Abraham Poulle, secretary of the honourable Council of Justice of this government, in the presence of the witnesses named below, Jacobus van der Heijden, heemraadheemraadThe origin of this word is uncertain, but is connected to the Dutch words heem (‘homestead’) and raad (‘councillor’). This was the title of a free burgher who served on the Collegie van Heemraden in the rural districts of the Cape, usually for a term of two years. of Stellenbosch, who, on the requisition of the honourable independent fiscal Joan Blesius, declares it to be true:
That about two months ago, he was detained in the prison for twelve successive days with a certain slave named Ari, who in various conversations declared to the deponent that during his childhood years [in the area] between Suratte and Persia, when he was playing on the beach, he was carried off by the Dutch and was eventually sold as a slave. That when the deponent then asked the aforementioned Ari for what reasons he was sitting there in the prison, he answered that he had run away because of the maltreatment by his baasbaasIn seventeenth-century Dutch this was used both in the sense of ‘head’ (e.g. ‘head carpenter’) and ‘master’. In South Africa the second meaning developed further, and thus baas came to be a synonym for meester (‘master’). It was the form that slaves (and Khoikhoi) would use to address male Europeans., Jan Lourensz of Rostok (alias the son-in-law of Trijn Ras), and his wife, with the intention never to return again because he was tired of life. He, Ari, went from there to the farm of Trijn Ras, situated across the Berg River, and found there two jongensjongensLiterally ‘boy.’ In Dutch it was common to use this word also to refer to male servants, irrespective of age. At the Cape, however, this usage was extended to slaves and then became exclusive, so that jongen (also in the deflected form jong) came to mean ‘male slave’, such that Afrikaans lost the use of the word to mean ‘boy’ and instead uses seun (from Dutch zoon) for both ‘boy’ and ‘son.’ In this primary meaning, the word has become obsolete in modern Afrikaans, except for the archaic terms tuinjong (‘garden boy’) and plaasjong (‘farm boy’), in the sense of male workers of colour., whom he told of his complaint and who gave him a piece of bread and a piece of tobacco, saying thereafter that he should take them and go and that they were not able to support him, nor to give him food. That he then went from there to the mountain named the Parel Diamand, and into the vineyard of the widow Barent Burghard, where he cut some bunches of grapes and consumed them, after which he went from there to the vineyard of Guilliam Frisnet where he, when sitting down in a ditch next to or under a rock, heard some creaking or rustling, whereupon he went towards it and found or met there three jongensjongensLiterally ‘boy.’ In Dutch it was common to use this word also to refer to male servants, irrespective of age. That Anthonij then said to him, Ari: “The weather is right now and the wind strong for setting fire to houses”, and immediately added to this: “Come, let us set this house alight”, whereupon Ari said: “I have no fire”, and received as answer from Anthonij: “We have sufficient fire”. That together with Anthonij he left the other two jongensjongensLiterally ‘boy.’ In Dutch it was common to use this word also to refer to male servants, irrespective of age. That hereupon Ari threw the burning tinder onto the thatched roof, while Anthonij shoved what remained of the burning tinder into it [the thatch], upon which the house instantly caught flame. That while the house was burning, Anthonij made noise on the door and when it was opened forthwith, Anthonij jumped in and took a gun from there. That after this, they again went to the others and fled up the mountain, where they took him, Ari, to a deserted little farm and took him into a hut made from shrubs, where they gave him to eat a cold piece of mutton which had been roasted in ash and which they kept there. After about half an hour expired, the other three jongensjongensLiterally ‘boy.’ In Dutch it was common to use this word also to refer to male servants, irrespective of age. There being nothing more to declare, he asserts to be convinced of the truth of his statement as in the text, offering to confirm the same (if needed and requested to it) with confirmed oaths.

Dat hij ongevaer [sic] twee maenden geleden twaelf agtereenvolgende dagen is gedetineert geweest in de gevankenisse [sic] bij seeker slaef genaemt Ari, die hem deposant onder andere discourssen heeft verklaert, dat hij in sijn kintse jaren tusschen Suratte en Persien aldaer aen strand speelende, van de Hollanders van daar is weggevoert, en eijndelijk als slaef verkogt. Dat hij deposant verder den voornoemde Ari vraegde om wat redenen hij aldaer gevangen sat, die daerop antwoorde, dat hij door mishandelinge van sijn baes, Jan Lourensz van Rostok (alias behuwt soon van Trijn Ras), en desselfs huijsvrou weggelopen met dat voornemen van noijt weder te komen om dat hij sijn leven moede was. This sentence, as also the other direct quotes lower down, is one of the very few instances where we have direct evidence of how Dutch was spoken by slaves at the Cape, for whom it was (in most cases) a second or third language, acquired in the unfavourable and extraordinary circumstances of slavery. What is significant about these sentences is that they give some of the earliest evidence for two crucial developments in eighteenth-century Cape Dutch which differentiate Afrikaans from metropolitan Dutch, viz. the use of ons as a subject (instead of wij) and the deflection of the finite verb, i.e. the verbal form is not changed according to the number of the subject: ons soek as opposed to wij zoeken, ons het as opposed to wij hebben.
